What’s Coming Up
Join me for the month of April for a deep dive
into the body and our words
𖥸 Friday April 10th | Interview with Davina Quinivan about her new memoir Possessions: A Memoir of Transformation in an Era of Precarity, a wild, genre-bending narrative that charts Quinlivan’s ultimate rejection of ‘passing for something else’ as she reclaims her mind and body.
𖥸 Friday April 17 | Interview with Ali Isaac about her new memoir Imperfect Bodies (published by Aina Marti-Balcells at Heloise Press) in which she shares the story of her parenting Carys, who has a rare genetic syndrome, as well as powerfully reflecting on motherhood, identity, the female body and the able and dis-abled body, as well as social and political definitions of normality.
𖥸 Week of April 20
A week of writing exercises, prompts and readings that explore the body - we’ll look at how other writers and artists have used the body in their work, I’ll share some simple exercises and writing prompts, plus some physical practices and at the end of the week I’ll invite us all to gather for a call to share what we have discovered, plus there’ll be an opportunity to have some of your words published on my page - an exhibition of our very own BODY WORK!
April 20 | April 22 | April 24 - pre recorded prompts and exercises land in your inbox
April 26 - Live call to check in and share
“The body remembers, the bones remember, the joints remember, even the little finger remembers. Memory is lodged in pictures and feelings in the cells themselves.”
- Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Women Who Run with Wolves
𖥸 SITTING in the DARK 𖥸
A return of these popular early morning writing sessions for May - great to give your writing a concentrated boost before summer madness begins. I’ll be in touch again with more info on these as I don’t want to bombard you here, but for those of you keen to pencil in the dates, here you go!
6-7am GMT | Friday May 8, 15, 22, 29, June 5, 12 | one hour of quiet writing together.

You do not need to do anything at all.
𓇸 If you fancy a nosey around my creative space, take a look at this lovely interview I had with Lyndsay Kaldor for her wonderful Atelier series, listen to me in conversation with Gabriela Blandy or listen to me in conversation with Lauren Barber about my creative life.
Ok amigas, that’s it for now - go slow with all this. These words and this content will always be here, you don’t have to consume it all now!
Much love,
Layla x
Note - as a subscriber, you’ll get an email about everything by way of reminder, or an alert in your Substack app if you’ve email alerts turned off.

Well, here I am sitting in the dark. I know it isn't the right day but I couldn't sleep. I don't know if I can make it on Friday because my daughter will be with us from Sweden but it's lovely to be here right now and know that, asleep or awake, there are people like you and my other Substack friends out there.
It’s helpful to have all this here; thank you! I shall absorb the rest posts and feeling ready to surrender to my blooming cancer fatigue. Thank you Layla! ✨⭐️🤍
