This morning I sat down to catch up on some Substack reads and comments on my own posts.
I spent a rich hour and a half in a buzzy cross-pollinating world.
I read about placentas and the rituals around them,
about auto-theory and Maggie Nelson,
I pondered botox and whether it is also freezing our emotions or making us happier
I thought about how I really should try face yoga
I typed about lying inside a giant felt womb and read a reply about a giraffe’s innards at the Venice Biennale
I read about writing through our bodies, about how it is maybe our body that makes us ready to write something at a certain moment
I read about the lack of social care provisions in the U.K.
and about the importance of not knowing when we set out to write
I read a great quote shared in my own comments from Anne Lamott
and other wise words in my comments shared from
I swapped book recommendations
I made notes for how face-freezing might be an interesting angle in my own next project. I thought again about face yoga …
I read of childhood songs and thought of the Laughing Policeman and sitting in the back of the car with a friend who would one day become my step brother
I recently joined
on a call they offered for paid subscribers and I tentatively (and nervously) shared my idea for my next writing project. It was such a support to see the interest the idea sparked and the places my idea led other people’s brains and where those thoughts then led my brain, cross-pollinating and sparking new connections.I love the juicy cross-pollination that happens on this platform.
It feels rich and generous and fecund.
And it got me thinking.
What if we all gathered on a call every now and then and just shared what we were thinking about ?! Shared with each other what we are writing, what we want to write, what we are afraid to write, what we are reading that has got us thinking, that we loved, hated, wanted more of ?
I would like to invite you all to a MULCH MEETING
It’ll be an hour on Zoom, with recording available, but this really is one to join live and share. Come with a pen and paper to jot down ideas sparked. Come with your next idea you’d like to air. Come with the book you’ve just read. Come with what you really don’t want to write about. Come with a question. Come to listen. Come to share.
I’m imagining all of our snippets and thoughts being spread out across the soil of our creative work, enriching it, insulating it, encouraging surprising seeds to grow.
If this first one goes well, I’m happy to make it a regular thing.

By way of beginning the MULCH, here is a song (actually whole album) I am OBSESSED with right now:
what a lovely and generous idea darling. I can feel the depth of generosity and openness behind you words and you offering here as I read them ❤️ it is a lovely thing to witness that aliveness of heart in another woman xxx also just love that you've thrown it out there as a 'Salon' - I was just saying to a friend the other day that we need to go back to the Salons of the old days where people used to sit around sharing thoughts, ideas, poems, visions....🙌🏻
this sounds so divine, would love to join if it ever becomes a daytime session x
